I had all kinds of nifty plans for the Fuji 300 today. Given my camera limitations, I was going to cruise the site & record all kinds of “lifestyle” images to keep & share. Making me a missionary of sorts. The weather forecast all week was sunny with cloud with 15 degrees for most of the day. Yeah well, thanks NHK and Fuji TV (you wouldve thought… never mind). 11 degrees at 10.30am, then it started raining and got colder. So I wussed out & stayed in my seat and bleated about my awol feet. The pit complex on one side of the straight and the grandstand on the other creates a concrete canyon of sorts, meaning the sounds are all there. WHAT? SORRY – YOU’LL NEED TO SPEAK UP! YES THANKS, I DO LIKE COFFEE AND MOTORCYCLES!

The good news is that Nismo have finally won another championship. All right!

Here is a photo of the car. In the pits. I thought that it would be better to include the big TV because it was quite dark. And cold.

Congratulations Satoshi and Benoit! And Nismo. Its been a long time waiting. And speaking of last year, even though nobody was, last years co-champ Daisuke Ito finished third in the race in the Eneos SC430 with Bjorn Wirdheim, after not racing for most of the season due to his nasty TV star accident.

The race was won by the Calsonic GT-R of Tsugio Matuda and Sebastien Phillippe. In the cold. The car has a livery similar to this bike:

The day had started not too cold, until we climbed into the hills. We trained to Shimatsuda, then took the Fuji Speedway Express (!). Nothing wrong with old buses. Dont be so judgemental.

Here’s some atmosphere. Looks a bit cold…

I think we may have jinxed the Woodone GT-R by sitiing almost opposite their pits as they were out after 20 laps…  Nobuteru Taniguchi & Dominik Farnbacher fared a bit better in GT300, winning the class. The Yunker Power Porsche had a great Battle Of The Drifters with Orido San’s Wedsport IS350 for many laps. Not sure how many. My brain had begun to freeze.

Clear, well focussed shots of Super GT Nissans are over rated I reckon.

Calsonic got new power unit. And they dont care who knows. Thats how they won the race. When you got new power unit you might win too. Word.

The Desperate and Dateless Camera Squad were throwin’ it down when the Race Queens came out.

All through the pitwalk, there was some kind of TV Shopping Network deal going on with the big screen broadcast. Didnt sell me on the cheesecake however. Looked a bit cold.

I aint watchin’ no damn Marches.

Something exciting happened in the opposite direction to the one I was facing. Maybe a March hit an iceberg.

I reckon Ralph Firman’s Cowboy Stance won the Pose Off. I was hoping he would bust out Blue Steel, but nah.

I was wearing two shirts, a jacket, hat, gloves (yes, gloves) & still whining about the cold. Shouldve shut up after this, but didnt.

Cars are on the grid. Must be time for some rain.

Getting a bit close to Daytona Prototype here… Didnt win the GT300 championship thankfully. Kazuki Hoshino and Hironobu Yasuda did that with the Mola Leopalace Z. Nice one chaps!

The Nissan supporters were going at it S-Pulse style. Juichi Wakisaka’s fans gave it a bit of a go, but he drives the wrong car, so, yeah.

Smiley geezer – Bibendum San.

Dammit. It’s not a GT. It’s a Prototype!

This was nuts. When the Japanese Anthem played, it was as if Jimi Hendrix had returned as a 12 year old Japanese girl. Unfortunately it took some time to defrost my wits, so here she is leaving the podium with her smokin’ gitbox.

The race start. I know. Im sorry.

Qualified first. Shrieked like a banshee. Dropped like a stone to 10th.

Perhaps as a concession to the ambitious name applied to the bus service (That said – “Express” generally means that the journey will be uniterrupted, which was true. The bus was just quite slow. Almost as much as the Studie Glad Z4. I know. That’s mean. It did look and sound great. WHAT?!) the bus fellow gave us a cool ChoroQ of the bus itself when we boarded. Yeah. I love Japan too.

The race photos are pretty dire, but if youve nowt better to do, are at:

To finish off, as the Super GT site doesnt usually have the English stuff up too quickly, for shits & giggles I ran the Jp version through Google Translater(tron):

All day I didnt want to sucker myself by thinking that the American public hadnt dropped the ball (so to speak). After all, Bush the Minor got back in ‘owt 4. But no! Nice one Americans! Nothing but net (as it were)!

I pinched the b ball theme from Supertouch, who also posted a fine interview with Shepherd Fairey this week.

Sunday was a little similar, not quite prepared to believe that McLaren had their first drivers championship since ’99. The race was a nailbiter enough, but who really could be totally confident that the FIA wouldnt find some bollocks to penalise Lewis Hamilton and hand the tltle to a Ferrari driver? Im sure they wouldnt mind which one. And even if Glock had slowed purposely, the points lost in the Spa debacle had been returned, so the right driver won. Although I think a hell of a lot more of Massa now. He can win next time. I dont mind.

Similar again was the IRL not so long ago with memories of ’07s strategic masterstroke. IRL races are at really antisocial times when you are in Japan. Apart from Motegi… I couldnt continue my photos of the potentially embarassing past theme in my Google search for Scott Dixon & am scannerless right now, so settled for this masterpiece. Publicists aye?

Omedeto Gozai Masu lads!

Hopefully I’ll be posting a photo of the 23 car after Fuji on Sunday. First Super GT race for me. Quite a month this is!

After my first sortie to Shelbys No.20 to snap some illicit shots of my new favourite kei van, I’d harboured a hankerin’ to get back and take a look inside. This would require an accomplice with a higher level of Nihongo than mine. Such as a local. Such as the missus. Sweet as.

Doesnt take too long to realise that this wont be your usual shopping experience, even for Tokyo.

Big Boss (says so on his business card), Okuyama san graciously let me blunder about his premises, pointing & shooting with my point & shoot. He is a drag racer himself with a stunning collection of muscle metal. One of the first things he mentioned was the matching numbers Shelby GT500 in the far corner of the shop. “Really?” I squeaked.

So it is.

I asked Okuyama san how long he has had it. “About ten years. I had to work very very hard!”. Hai so desu!

I couldnt get a decent shot of it, but someone else did.

Fancy a Bell Helmets bag? Same.

I found some killer old school Yamaha motocross shirts. I (ahem) want those too…

I was beginning to detect a slight Stateside influence…

…remembering that this is a shop with the world’s coolest proprietor, not a museum where you pay to get in.

Okayama san explained to the missus that living a lifestyle like this in Japan can have it’s difficulties as many people (esp. the older ones) dont approve of or understand a US centric drag racing/muscle car obession, but it is all worthwhile due to the people you meet (Ive paraphrased a bit here…). He is a prime example of that.

Big Daddy may have left us, but the trinkets we have to remember him with are cool as all hell. Im a starter for the burger holding Rat Fink nodding doll. As it were.

Modern Nascar toots, but The King ruled. Peter Max (http://www.petermax.com/) aint bad either…

I will never have enough money to purchase everything I wanted to from this shop. I dont feel too bothered by that however. I will happily go back every week for the rest of my life to deal to my wages… Having seen the Hell Motors Triumph cap, I now have the special feeling that some fine person created a baseball cap with me in mind. Mmmm… special feeling…

I imagine that after about my fiftieth visit, I may have an idea of about half the stock here. Then I can start on the next fifty visits.

At various times my manners would leave me completely and I would leave the missus chatting with Okayama san as I would wander around the shop again like a slack jawed yokel.

Im not sure what is under this cover, but I did notice some mighty slick, mighty wide tires underneath. Okayama san will be competing at Motegi on December 7. Same day as the Yokohama Hot Rod Show. Might be a good day to eat a hamburger. And drink a Coke. Then a beer. Followed by another beer.

We had a GoGo Time alright. Shelbys No.20 is worth a visit to Japan in it’s own right, but if you do make it here be absolutely sure to pay a visit. And check it out – open to midnight Saturday! If you need directions, I can point you there.

Arigato Gozai Masu Okayama san!

Here are some shots from Bee*R that I took the other day. Bee*R is just around the corner from where I live. So I stalk them pretty regularly. And they are very nice about it. So far.

Tsuyoshi Tezuka’s D1 Skylines. Yep.

Those crazy Skidboys…

The Bosses everyday Hachiroku notchback. It is definitely everyday – I see it here pretty much every time I go past.

Meanwhile, further up the road, past the corn…

…is M Sport, of race & rally fame.

I took this lurking about in a side street. Figured my life needed some glamour.

Further up the same road is Shelbys No.20, back near Bee*R is a Monster (Tajima) Motorsport workshop, then there is the scooter customizing place…

Since arriving in Japan Ive come to understand the worth of kei-class vehicles. Tax & registration advantages aside, the lack of road width makes a narrow track getabout make total sense. In a country with wide open spaces, some of these cars & especially vans look as though they may experience strife in a moderate side wind, but here the proportion is just right. Side winds are not too much of a problem when the street is 8 metres wide with 3 storey houses lining it. Conversely, the American (Amerikajin?) influence is strong here, partly due to the amount of Americans stationed here, the rabid car culture and general interest in things American among many of those born in the last 40 years. So, quite frequently you’ll see totally inappropriate American iron thugging it’s way through streets barely wide enough for a Toyota Crown. Hummers in Tokyo? Really? Wasnt a Nissan Patrol big enough? Anyway, Im even boring myself now…

Sooo… here’s the answer, in the car park of Shelbys No.20 in Machida in western Tokyo. This van is almost perfect to my way of thinking. So Cal style with hints of Bonneville! I didnt have time to go into the store, but Im heading back soon.

Not sure which I like most – wheel treatment, fake side pipes, real painted graphics…

…possibly the graphics, but then there is the fan, the dice, the wheel…

That rear door looks pretty kustom, but the skull makes it perfect. The details on this are awesome. This van deserves a custom shoe!

When it comes to used tyres, bigger is probably better.

Tbc.. in fact, I may pay another visit on Saturday…

That was then. This is now.

I had been using the name musashi999 for artwork and a few other things, but hadnt searched it at any stage to see if other people were using it. Until a few days ago. So now I think its time for a change to avoid confusion with the other musashi999’s about the place…

Kirameki san has been an idea Ive been toying with for a while, so all good!
